First of all - How to Overcome the Fear of Public Speaking....

Unfortunately Nerves cause more trauma and trepidation among most people, whether they be magicians, like me, entertainers, public speakers or just those of us who have to give a report or face an interview or a meeting with the boss. There's no other single factor that causes so much fear and apprehension and fear certainly leads many people to avoid all situations that induce these horrible symptoms of "nerves". The result is that so many opportunities for advancement in all areas of our lives are lost and this is a great shame because nerves can be kept in check.

I'm not going to tell you that you will banish nerves completely, because that is almost impossible; in fact, getting rid of nerves all together may be the wrong thing to do, because a certain amount of nervousness can add sparkle to your performance.
But take comfort...... the terror, the sweaty palms, the dry lips, the urge to run to the lavatory are all quite natural. Believe me!

Nervous tension is a perfectly normal reaction to any strong emotion and is really something of a throwback to uncivilised life thousands of years ago when meeting an adversary or a daunting and frightening situation meant that you had to put the maximum effort into either fighting or running away. It's known as the "Fight or Flight" syndrome.

In any such circumstance, the emotion of the occasion starts adrenaline surging through your body, your heart rate increases, your blood pressure rises and the sweat glands in the skin work overtime to carry away the excess heat produced.

All that hyper action is perfectly normal and is just your body getting ready to perform at maximum efficiency. And remember that it’s not just confined to magicians; - public speakers, actors, sportsmen and many others go through exactly the same process before performing.

You just have to believe that nerves are natural, - not very pleasant, - but natural, - and we all suffer from them. In fact, I would go so far as to say, if you don’t feel nervous before embarking on anything worthwhile, then don’t do it.

Those who don’t feel nervous usually never achieve anything really worthwhile or attain any great heights in life.

I’m sure we are all familiar with the feelings of nervousness. The “butterflies in the stomach”, the tight, breathless feeling in the chest and the feeling of nausea. It feels just great, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, most people regard these feelings as a sign of their particular weakness and that they are not meant to be public speakers or entertainers.

These feelings even prevent many people from attending interviews or situations that would almost certainly lead them to higher achievement and greater opportunities.

Don’t let these feeling of “Nerves” or “Stage Fright” prevent you from achieving great things.
